How to descale your coffee machine

Before you begin to descale your coffee machine, first read the instruction manual that came with your coffee machine, as some techniques, procedures and products can void your manufacturer’s warranty.

We recommend that you utilize a proper citric acid based descaling solution specifically designed for coffee machines. Carefully follow the instructions on the packet to ensure the right mixture, failing to do so could damage your machine or result in an ineffective descale.

Descale your coffee machine when it is cold. Put the mixed descaling solution into the water tank, turn on the machine and pump through the steam arm for approximately 20-25 seconds.

If your coffee machine cannot pump water through the steam arm, pump water through the group handle without the handle in place. Immediately turn off the machine.

Now your espresso machine is cold with the descaling solution inside all the water holding components (boiler, pump, etc). Now pump more solution through for about 1 minute. Turn the coffee machine off again and wait for descaling solution to do its work.

While you are waiting for the descaling solution to eat away at the limescale build up, take the time to clean the other parts of the machine.

Repeat the steps above until the water tank is completely empty. When you are at this stage all of the descaling solution should have been pumped through the coffee machine, removing the limescale build up. The whole descaling process should take about 5 cycles to empty the water tank and take from 40 minutes to hour to complete.

Once you are finished pumping the descaling solution through the machine you must remove any remnants of descaling solution to ensure that you coffee doesn’t have an artificially bitter taste. Rinse the water tank in your coffee machine and fill with fresh water. Run the entire container of fresh water through your coffee machine, and then repeat again 2 times. After this make one or two coffees to eliminate any bitter taste and throw them away.
